ABOUT THE ILLEGAL DETENTION OF SHEIKH IBRAHIM ZAKZAKY BY THE NIGERIAN ARMY, FOR HIS IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TO: His Excellency. Ban Ki-Moon. General Secretary. United Nations

FROM: Lic. Masuma Assad de Paz. Chairwoman. UMMA. Argentinian Muslim Women

SUBJECT: Sheikh Zakzaky and the Islamic Movement in Nigeria We are writing to ask for your immediate intervention to ensure the release of Sheikh Al-Zakzaky, his wife and the hundreds of other IMN detainees. Sheikh Al-Zakzaky has been illegally detained in custody by the Nigerian Military since December 14th 2015. The Abuja Division of the Nigerian Federal High Court ruled on 2nd of December 2016 ruled that the continued detention without charge of Sheikh Al-Zakzaky and his wife by the Nigerian Military was not based on law. As a result of its ruling the court ordered the release of the Sheikh and his wife within 45 days, i.e. on or before the 15th January 2017 but despite the court order the Nigerian government has not complied and are in Contempt of Court and in contravention of the universal principles of the Rule of Law. We remind the United Nations of its commitment to upholding the principles of the rule of law and in particular the resolution 69/123 adopted by the General Assembly on 10th December 2014 : “The rule of law at national and international levels.” This resolution recalling Resolution 68/116 of the 16th December 2013:

* Reaffirmed its commitment to the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and international law, which are indispensable foundations of a more peaceful, prosperous and just world, and reiterating its determination to foster strict respect for them and to establish a just and lasting peace all over the world;

* Reaffirmed that human rights, the rule of law and democracy are interlinked and mutually reinforcing and that they belong to the universal and indivisible core values and principles of the United Nations;

* Reaffirmed the need for universal adherence to and implementation of the rule of law at both the national and international levels and its solemn commitment to an international order based on the rule of law and international law, which, together with the principles of justice, is essential for peaceful coexistence and cooperation among States. Therefore we urge you to make urgent representations for the release of Sheikh Al-Zakzaky, his wife and the hundreds of other IMN detainees. There are serious concerns over his health because at the time of his arbitrary detention, he received four bullets in his body, and his family and the followers that have had access to see him, assure that he is in a very delicate condition. Finally, we demand justice for the Zaira massacre and appropriate sanctions against the Nigerian government, for its continuing violations of basic human rights standards, and for work openly to, harass, persecute, and disappear Shia Muslims that advocate for peace and justice in their country, and who denounce and suffer, more than any other group, the aberrations of so-called Islamic terrorist groups such as Boko Haram, integrated by perverted sociopaths who are at the antipodes of humanitarian principles of brotherhood taught by true Islam:

“Who kills an innocent person, it is as if he had killed to all mankind.”
